MS756 Disk17_Box 9, Idaho State Archives. \u003c/p\u003e"]}},{"label":{"en":["Date"]},"value":{"en":["1965 (captured)"]}},{"label":{"en":["Language"]},"value":{"en":["Nez Perce \"Niimiipuu\" (primary)","English (secondary)"]}},{"label":{"en":["Description"]},"value":{"en":["\u003cp\u003eThis interview Alex Pinkham, May 1965, is where he described the beginning of the Nez Perce War from his band’s perspective.  An old man in Whitebird was killed by a white settler over water, raising tensions high.  Joseph’s Wallawa band, recently joined this band at Whitebird.  As tensions grew the army hired Chapman as a guide, who was a man married to a Nez Perce woman.  He was the first to fire since Joseph had told the native warriors not to fire unless fired upon.  Pinkham discussed many aspects of the war answering various questions regarding some rumors posed by the unidentified interviewer, like the number of true Chiefs at the battles, the number of wives Jospeh possessed, and other individual tales from that era.  Pinkham also regaled a Nez Perce creation story involving chipmunks, grizzly bear, coyote and rattlesnake.  Among these tales say, for instance, why the rattle snake has a flat head and why the chipmunk has stripes on its back.  This interview is part of MS 756, the Zoa Swayne papers, held at the Idaho State Historical Society in Boise, Idaho.
