Miles was an 80 year old of the Nez Perce Tribe in this interview dated May 31, 1960.  In this interview he talked about his recollections, via his father, concerning Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce war.  Miles’s Father was with Joseph throughout the whole flight.  He blames the war on Howard’s unrealistic orders to have Joseph move his cattle across the river on to the reservation with in 30 days, this order given at a council at Fort Lapwai.  Miles said that Joseph’s band was wealthy and had over a 1000 head of cattle and with the river swollen Chief Joseph’s Wallawa band was unable to move his cattle in time.  After attempting to follow the general’s directive and being unable to do so, Joseph went to meet with General Howard where Joseph was accused of staying across the river to “kill white men”.  J.J. Miles talked about the Battle at Whitebird and then Cottonwood Creek battle.  The 3rd battle “other side of Kooskia” and the how the only survivor of one of the battle “Major McConnel” became the superintendent of the Nez Perce after the war.  Miles, mother’s father, fought for the US Army so he has tales from both sides.  He also talked about how well his family were received to Canada, given land and welcomed with open arms.  Miles’s Family returned to Idaho in 1892. This interview is part of MS 756, the Zoa Swayne papers, held at the Idaho State Historical Society in Boise, Idaho. Originally recorded on one 4-inch reel-to-reel magnetic tape and, by the Idaho State Historical Society transferred to compact disk and then converted to .wav computer files (Disk 16 Tracks 1-4 totaling 1 hour and 2 minutes).\u003c/p\u003e (summary)"]}},{"label":{"en":["Format"]},"value":{"en":[".mp3"]}},{"label":{"en":["Identifier"]},"value":{"en":["MS756 Disk 16_Box9 (local)"]}},{"label":{"en":["Keyword"]},"value":{"en":["J.J.
